FSC ANZ responds to VicForests Announcement
VicForests not proceeding to meet the Controlled Wood Standard by 2020
FSC ANZ notes that VicForests is not proceeding with its efforts to meet the Controlled Wood Standard by 2020. We encourage VicForests to continue to change their harvesting practices in order to be able to meet this entry level standard at some future time. We do not accept the claim made by VicForests that they will not receive a fair assessment.
As VicForests well knows, all assessments are carried out by independent auditors. The FSC itself plays no role in the outcome of the assessment. If they meet the standard, they get the certification.
There are examples of native forestry in NSW, Tasmania and Victoria that have met the full FSC Forest Management Standard which is the internationally recognised standard of responsible forest management.
Following its AGM earlier in the week, the FSC is excited to announce the first Indigenous member of the FSC Australia Board. Mr David Collard a Nyoongar man from West Australia was elected for a three year term on the Board representing the social chamber. He also currently serves as the Chair of the FSC ANZ Indigenous Working Group and is the Alternate for the Pacific Region of the Permanent Indigenous Peoples Council of FSCI.
