GECA’s Positive Procurement Pledge
Ecolabels Fairtrade, FSC and MSC support the GECA Procurement Pledge!
GECA (Good Environmental Choice Australia) is launching a unique opportunity for organisations to publicly demonstrate their leadership by committing to use their purchasing power in a way that will do good for the planet and the people on it.
Sustainable procurement is about considering the environmental, social and economic impacts of purchased goods and services. Through sustainable procurement, organisations can build resilience and become future-proofed through increased efficiency and effectiveness.
In April 2017, the International Organization for Standardization released the world’s first International Standard for Sustainable Procurement (ISO 20400). The new Standard is designed to ensure that the purchasing policies of organisations are robust and address potential social and environmental issues within their entire supply chain. As Australia’s only not-for-profit multi-sector ecolabelling program and advisory, GECA believes there has never been a better time for organisations to start their positive procurement journey.
“We want to help businesses and organisations to make good choices and be part of the solution for responsible production and consumption,” says GECA’s chief executive Kate Harris.
GECA is calling for organisations, both big and small, to take the Positive Procurement Pledge to develop, document and implement a sustainable procurement policy to govern all purchasing decisions by 31 December 2020.
The pledge is open to any organisation – regardless of its sector, size, and location – that is involved in procurement decisions and processes. This includes businesses; government agencies; industry groups; and non-governmental organisations. Pledgers will need to measure and prove their progress to GECA over a three-year period and allow GECA to publicly share their key achievements.
At GECA, we understand that every organisation’s pledge journey will be unique. The Positive Procurement Pledge has been designed to allow organisations to move to the next level at their own pace no matter where they’re starting from. It’s about making significant progress across the pledge period and beyond, not perfection.
