Congratulations Officeworks, Australia's first signatory to the Vancouver Declaration!
Today, it is expected businesses that use the world’s resources must ensure they’re responsibly sourced and cared for. Because of this, and as part of our dedication to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, FSC launched the Vancouver Declaration, a public promise made by companies across the globe to work towards more sustainable sourcing of forest products. The first signatory in Australia, was retailer and supplier of office products and solutions – Officeworks.
You may know Officeworks for being your go to for fine point pens or for handy printing services, but did you know about its commitment to sustainability?
As a leading retailer, with more than 8,000 paper and wood products in stores, Officeworks’ commitment to FSC sends a message down the supply chain, to make an influential contribution to increasing responsible forest management practices.
In the last 12 months, 85% of Officeworks private label paper products are FSC certified! As part of its commitment to responsible sourcing of forestry products, Officeworks has a 2020 goal that all paper products are either FSC certified or 100% recycled. Their certified product range has grown now to include desks, pencils, notebooks and paper.
Officeworks environmental actions go beyond compliance and responsible sourcing. Building on their sustainability commitments, supplying FSC certified material, in 2017 the leading retailer launched Restoring Australia – an Australian-first initiative developed in collaboration with Greening Australia, which sees two trees planted for every one used, based on the weight of paper-based products customers buy at Officeworks.
By the end of 2018, Officeworks in partnership with Greening Australia plans to have more than 300,000 seeds and seedlings in the ground across the Tasmanian Midlands, New South Wales Highlands, Kangaroo Island in South Australia and the Victorian Volcanic Plains, where more than 85% of the natural habitat has been lost. The planting is helping increase water quality and revegetate bushland so that local endangered wildlife can flourish.
FSC Australia CEO, Sara Gipton comments, ‘’It is encouraging to see a big retailer taking the next steps after demonstrating such commitment and success in responsible procurement. FSC certified products ensure that forests are managed for all, forever – balancing social, environmental and economic interests.Having so many FSC certified products shows a real commitment, that Officeworks have now taken to further support local restoration projects. We look forward to working closely with Officeworks to help raise awareness of FSC and sustainable sourcing in Australia’’.
