14/11/13 -  Controlled Wood Evaluation of Marubeni Corporation

SCS Global Services  (SCS) is conducting a controlled wood (CW) annual surveillance audit of Marubeni Corporation (SCS-COC-000467) for wood sourced from Western Australia. The field work was conducted on the 11th, 12th and 13th of  November in the Bunbury Region and Perth, WA. Marubeni commenced stakeholder consultation on the 12th of September in Bunbury.  SCS is now seeking additional stakeholder consultation following this field work, but prior to completion of a draft report. 

03/11/13 – ABP Koala Protection and Management Plan

Australian Bluegum Plantations Pty Ltd (ABP) is seeking input from interested stakeholders into their Koala Protection and Management Plan (version 8).

24/10/13 - Carter Holt Harvey Wood Products - Annex 3

Carter Holt Harvey Woodproducts (Southern Region) Pty Ltd (CHH) is undertaking anassessment of the activities of its suppliers of plantation grown radiata pinewood chips to verify that High Conservation Values (HCVs) in Forest Management Units (FMUs) in which harvesting of wood occurs are identified and protected.


Comments and information may be presented via the email address info@pinnaclebypinnacle.com.  Meetings with stakeholders will be arranged as required.  We request that comments be presented by the end of November 2013 in order that they may be taken into account during the next round of FMU audits. Comments received after this date will be included in subsequent audits. 

18/10/13 Forest Management FSC Certification Reassessment 2013 of Hancock Victorian Plantations Pty Limited in Victoria, Australia

The Rainforest Alliance is conducting the FSC forest management and chain of custody Reassessment of Hancock Victorian Plantations Pty Limited (HVP). The forest area under the scope of this certificate (SW-FM/COC – 001128) is located in Victoria and comprises a total area of approximately 245,000 ha.

The audit will be implemented from the 2nd to the 6th of December 2013.

27/09/13 Forest Management carried out by Forest Products Commission Western Australia (FPC)

In May 2013 Soil Association Woodmark conducted a Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) assessment of the forest management by Forest Products Commission Western Australia, within the state-owned karri forest in South West WA available for timber production (GR: Latitude: 116 deg. E. Longitude: 34 deg. S), against the requirements of the FSC-STD-30-010 version 2 (October 4th 2006), FSC Controlled Wood Standard, (you can view this standard at www.soilassociation.org/woodmark).

Thank you for expressing an interest and submitting comments in relation to the FSC Controlled Wood evaluation of Forest Products Commission Western Australia (FPC). As a result of the audit in May 2013 a number of non-compliances against the standard were identified. FPC have invited Woodmark to conduct an evaluation of progress made against the non-compliances and as part of this process it is important to consult with stakeholders.

In particular the audit team will evaluate whether FPC have consulted with stakeholders in accordance with the standard requirements (standard ref; 1.3, 4.4, 5.2) and whether it can be demonstrated that forest management activities in included FMU's do not threaten high conservation values (standard ref; 5.1, 5.2 and FSC Australia High Conservation Evaluation Framework).

31/8/2013 - Notification of FSC Preliminary Assessment by SCS Global Services of VicForests.

As part of an FSC preliminary assessment, SCS is currently seeking stakeholder input regarding the forest management of VicForests.

SCS Global Services (SCS), will conduct a preliminary assessment against both FSC’s Controlled Wood Standard for Forest Management Enterprises FSC-STD-30-010 (V 2-0), and the SCS Interim Standard for Forest Management Certification in Australia, Version 1.0.

A preliminary assessment is designed to identify any major gaps or problem areas in VicForests’s forest management practices regarding conformance to the FSC standard. According to FSC protocols, this assessment cannot yet result in an award of certification. If VicForests chooses to proceed, a full evaluation may follow at a later date.

The preliminary assessment process includes the following phases:

§ Public notification: distribution of the standard and solicitation of comments on the certification applicant; Audit planning and document review;

§ Field assessment: A representative sample of field sites and operations within the defined forest area are inspected by a team of auditors;

§ Stakeholder consultation;

§ Synthesis of findings: Compliance with the standard is ascertained and the certification decision is formulated;

§ Reporting: A report describing the evaluation process, findings, and an assessment of VicForests readiness for a later certification audit is produced.

Dates
The field evaluation is scheduled to commence during the week of September 30th, 2013.  SCS will make arrangements to meet with interested parties during the evaluation if appropriate, but it is preferred that comments are submitted before the evaluation commences.

Call for Public Participation
SCS welcomes comments on the forest management of VicForests or other topics pertinent to their conformance to the standard, such as whether VicForests complies with the legal, social, technical, and environmental requirements of the standard or identification of high conservation value forests within the lands of VicForests.  The audit team can make arrangements to allow stakeholders to meet with them during the evaluation upon request.  All comments and sources will be kept in strict confidence at the request of the commenter.

VicForests are also encouraging all stakeholders to have input into their draft Forest Management Plan and draft strategy for identifying and managing High Conservation Values (HCV) during this assessment process.
 
The draft Forest Management Plan is an overview of VicForests and how they conduct their operations, and draft HCV strategy outlines the process which are used to identify, assess, manage and monitor high conservation values within their forests.

In October 2013 we will carry out a Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) assessment of forest management by SFM Forest Products against the requirements of the Woodmark Generic Standard adapted for use in Australia (v4.1 Oct 2010) (you can view this standard at www.soilassociation.org/woodmark).

A full list of sites managed by SFM Forest Products is attached in a table below and feedback regarding management practices at any of these sites is welcome.

21/05/13 Notification of evaluation of Forestry South Australia’s eligibility as a type I member of the PF Olsen (Aus) Pty Ltd FM Group.

Forestry South Australia has applied to PF Olsen (Aus) Pty Ltd for Type I membership of their Forest Stewardship Council®1 Forest Management Group. Forestry South Australia is forest manager of plantations owned by the Trust Company (Australia) Limited as trustee for the Forestry Investment Trust and the ANZFIF Sub 1 in the Wattle Range area of South Australia.

PF Olsen Australia will make its final decision about the eligibility of Forestry South Australia to satisfy it requirements as a member of a Well managed Group Forest after considering comments from interested parties. The decision will not be made before 20th June, 2013.

05/04/13 FSC 2013 Annual Surveillance of Soil Association Woodmark (SA) – COC assessment

Accreditation Services International (ASI) performs regular surveillance assessments of accredited Certification Bodies to ensure that FSC's standards are consistently applied across the world.

ASI, on behalf of FSC AC, will be conducting a Chain Of Custody surveillance assessment of Soil Association at an Australian Chain of Custody audit on the 19th April 2013.

30/01/2013 Boral Timber Fibre Exports Annex 3.

Boral Timber Fibre Exports has been working towards certification of its wood supply under FSC STD40-005 for a number of years. Further to a previous consultation in 2009 they have further developed and revised the Annex 3 approach to evaluation of High Conservation Values taking into account Advice from FSC and the development of the Draft Framework for Evaluation of HCVs by FSC Australia.

Boral are seeking consultation with interested and affected stakeholders in regard to the approach proposed by the Annex 3. Written comments may be forwarded via the email address on the website or by mail to FSC Consultation, Boral Timber Fibre Exports Pty Ltd PO Box 6026 Silverwater NSW 1811. Meetings may be arranged for those who prefer to discuss the procedure directly.

Boral are also seeking information from stakeholders about HCVs in FMUs that we propose to audit. These FMUs will be available on the website by the end of January.

Consideration will be given to information and comments about the Annex 3 received before the end of March and prior to a proposed audit in early April 2013. The process is an active one and infromation or comment recieved after March 2013 will taken into account in future assessment. Information about FMU HCVs would be appreciated by the beginning of March so enable FMU audits to occur during March 2013 ahead of the general audit.
