Public Notification of Pending FSC Controlled Wood Evaluation of Midway Ltd

Midway Ltd (Midway) is seeking Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Controlled Wood (CW) certification for Forest Management Enterprises for their plantation land in Victoria. Midway manages a total plantation estate of some 22,324 ha. Plantations on freehold land owned by Midway are situated in the Otways, Upper Goulburn and Ballarat regions, and comprise 10,022 ha. An additional 11,544 ha is managed by Midway for other parties under commercial arrangements. In most cases Midway has a direct interest in these plantations through either joint ventures, leases and or options to purchase the harvest. These plantations are located within Victoria in the Otways, Ballarat, Upper Goulburn and Gippsland regions. Midway also owns an additional 758 ha on leasehold land.

Hardwood species (Eucalyptus globulus and small areas of Eucalyptus nitens) account for 93% of the plantation area and softwood (Pinus radiata) accounts for 7%. The hardwood plantation is managed for pulpwood production; the softwood plantation is managed for sawlog and pulpwood production.

Notification of Forico’s application for use of alpha-cypermethrin

Within Tasmania, Forico manages 170,000 hectares of freehold land that includes approximately 100,000 hectares of plantation. Natural forest areas within the forest estate are managed for biodiversity and conservation values. As part of the commitment to sustainable forest management practices, Forico are preparing a temporary derogation to use alpha-cypermethrin. The temporary derogation will enable a registered insecticide to be used by Forico to protect eucalyptus plantations from defoliation by a variety of pests under strict controls.

FSC International requires forest managers seek a chemical derogation for the use of chemicals described as ‘Highly Hazardous’. Forico has removed the reliance on the use of the majority of chemicals on the FSC Highly Hazardous list, with the exception of alpha-cypermethrin. Forico adopts an integrated pest management system that utilises a suite of control measures. However, as with any crop management operation, on occasion there becomes a necessity to apply a pesticide, where monitoring provides quantifiable evidence that damage levels are having a detrimental affect on tree survival and growth. Additional certification documentation, including the Forest Management Plan, and the HCV Assessment and Management Plan, can be downloaded and reviewed by accessing the Forico website www.forico.com.au. Feedback can be directed:

  • through written submissions: Address to Forcio’s Certification and Compliance Manager, PO Box 5316, Launceston 7250;
  • via email: forico at forico.com point au; or
  • or if you have any questions or require additional information, please contact Forcio’s Certification and Compliance Manager: (03) 6335 5201
